Who are ABC?
According to Wikipedia, ABC are an English new wave band that first came to prominence in the early 1980s.
The band don’t appear to be on Twitter, but you can find “ABC Singer Songwriter Performer” Martin Fry at @ABCFRY.
Why did you buy this album?
I didn’t. This is one of my wife’s CDs, now assimilated into our huge marital CD collection. Apparently, I should like it!
What’s it like?
It’s baroque 80s pop, incredibly well orchestrated and produced, and full of those quintessentially 80s pop sounds; drum machines, cheesy sax, and spoken word segments in songs.
After listening to it now, do you like this album?
I wasn’t expecting to like this (it’s 80s pop after all), but after 3 listens, it’s started to grow on me. ‘Poison Arrow‘ and ‘The Look of Love (Part One)‘, thanks to 30+ years of radio play, are as familiar as nursery rhymes, and still stand up as incredibly good pop songs (apart from the awful spoken word bit in the latter). The rest of the album holds up equally as well, though I could have lived without the LM-1 drum machine used throughout.
This version of the album (’98 remaster) also had the added bonus track ‘Theme from ‘Mantrap’‘, which was not included on the original album. I could have lived without this too…
Any stand-out tracks?
Other than the obvious singles, I found the appallingly titled ‘4 Ever 2 Gether‘ to stick in my head after the end. Only Prince could get away with using numbers in his song titles like that, because, well, he was Prince.
Rating out of 10?
A surprising 7/10
