Who are Afro Celt Sound System?

Having done Wikipedia and Twitter, we turn to their official Facebook page; “Afro Celt Sound System Official Facebook page. New studio album THE SOURCE out now on CD, Double Vinyl with USB featuring bonus tracks & Digital”.

That’s handy…

Why did you buy this album?

As I mentioned in the previous post, a university flatmate of mine had ‘Volume 2: Release‘ on vinyl, which caught my eye. When ACSS released ‘Volume 3: Further in Time‘ I saw the review in Q magazine, and went to one of the many, many CD retailers in Manchester to buy it.

What’s it like?

It’s possible that I’m over-familiar with this album, having had it the longest of all three ACSS albums in my collection. It’s another step further away from the EDM heavy debut, with more world music influences and more actual songs.

Sadly, after building up a good head of steam, it doesn’t seem to end with a sense of closure so much as just come to a stop. Listening to the album in the car means it repeats automatically, and it always surprises me when the first track starts up again. At least ‘Volume 2…‘ had an instrumental reprise of the opening track to give a sense of it finishing.

After listening to it now, do you still like this album?

Yes, though again familiarity may play a part in this. This album holds together better than either of the previous albums, and I genuinely look forward to listening to most of the tracks. The last track and its ending leaves something to be desired though.

Any stand-out tracks?

As with the previous album, it’s the tracks with the guest vocalists that stick in my head; ‘Life Begin Again‘, featuring Robert Plant, is great, and ‘When You’re Falling‘, featuring label-mate Peter Gabriel, is even better.

Rating out of 10?

  1. Stand-out tracks? Not the one sang by Peter Gabriel, wich I found the last interesting on this record. All others are utterly good!
