Who are The Aquabats?

According to Wikipedia; “The Aquabats are an American rock band formed in Orange County, California in 1994”.

Concise.

Why did you buy this album?

In an attempt to entertain our eldest son, we stumbled across “The Aquabats Super Show” on Amazon Prime Video (and later on CITV). It was a combination of the 60s Batman TV show and The Monkees, with new wave pop, that was very hard to dislike.

We enjoyed the songs in the show, so I thought we’d give their albums a go. Having previously bought the most recent album, ‘Hi-Five Soup!‘, I thought we’d go a little earlier in their discography, and went for the cheapest…

What’s it like?

It’s fun! There are hints of the group’s third-wave ska roots, but here they’re heading towards a more pop-punk / rock sound, which mostly works. Other than the Brechtian ‘Chemical Bomb‘, most of the lyrics are fairly light hearted, exactly what you’d expect from song titles like ‘The Man with Glooey Hands‘, ‘Lovers of Loving Love‘, and ‘Giant Robot-Birdhead‘…

After listening to it now, do you (still) like this album?

Prior to this listen through, this album was in my car for some substantial amount of time as  I ferried our eldest around to and from school, so I’ve heard it quite a lot. In fact, in the course of writing this post, I had to recover the CD from my wife’s car, where it’s kept for the same reason. It’s still fun, but some of the tracks can be a bit wearing on the umpteenth time through…

Any stand-out tracks?

I still rate the opener, ‘Sequence Erase‘ pretty highly. There’s also the terrific ‘Giant Robot-Birdhead‘, and ‘Canis Lupis‘, a song devoted to dogs (“If you’re nice to a dog it will hang around, You can pick one up at the local pound!“).

Rating out of 10?

6/10. Points knocked off for over-familiarity.
