Who are The Aquabats?

Having done Wikipedia and Twitter, we turn to the Instagram account for the band for more details, where we get; “The Officially Official Instagram of The Aquabats! and The Aquabats! Super Show!

That’s cleared that up then…

Why did you buy this album?

This was the first Aquabats album I bought after watching “The Aquabats! Super Show” with our eldest son. As he enjoyed the songs in the show, I thought I’d get at least one of their albums so he could listen to something he liked when in the car with us.

This is the most-recent album, and has the band line-up he’s familiar with on the cover, so this was the obvious first choice.

What’s it like?

This is a more electronic sounding album than previous releases, with the typical narrative songs and geek-culture references we’ve come to expect. There’s nothing here that’s going to make you think deeply or warrant a discussion in detail, but it will make you laugh.

Hooray for silly music!

After listening to it now, do you (still) like this album?

I do, but less than I did initially. Part of that is the over-familiarity of it; having had it in the car since I bought it, it’s been listened to a lot.

The songs are still very well-crafted pop with hugely catchy choruses, but I prefer the previous album, ‘Charge!!‘.

Any stand-out tracks?

There’s a couple. The opening track, ‘The Shark Fighter!‘, is one of the best songs The Aquabats have ever recorded (and inspired a solid episode of the TV show too), and ‘The Legend Is True!‘ is inspired.

Honourable mentions must also go to ‘Just Can’t Lose!‘ and ‘Food Fight On The Moon!‘…

Rating out of 10?

7/10.
