Who is/are Barenaked Ladies?

I think we all know who BNL are by now. If not, look at this, this, this, or this

Why did you buy this album?

Another from my wife’s collection. This was the first BNL CD she bought, after hearing ‘One Week‘, and earlier seeing them live supporting The Beautiful South. Apparently, they all wore blue shirts and ran round the stage…

What’s it like?

This is the breakthrough album, launching BNL in the UK and US, and revitalising them in their home market of Canada. At the time it came out over here, I remember hearing the opening track (and lead single) ‘One Week‘ on nearly every radio station, and seeing the album artwork on posters everywhere. I even bought the CD single for ‘One Week‘.

It’s got everything we’ve come to expect from BNL by now, but with some extra polish. In a similar fashion to their début ‘Gordon‘, there’s no filler in there.

After listening to it now, do you (still) like this album?

I’m a little over-familiar with this album now, but I do still like it, though I find it hard to listen to ‘It’s All Been Done‘ without thinking of the Argos adverts that used it a few years ago…

Any stand-out tracks?

Lead single ‘One Week‘ is an obvious stand-out, thanks to the clever delivery of the lyrics, with ‘Leave‘, ‘Call and Answer‘ and ‘Never Is Enough‘ also worth a mention.

Rating out of 10?

9/10.
