Who is/are Barenaked Ladies?

Really. If you don’t know by now, check here.

Why did you buy this album?

Another from my wife’s collection. We’ve reached the “I’m-a-fan-so-I’ll-get-each-album’ stage…

What’s it like?

After the huge success of ‘Stunt‘, BNL were gaining a reputation as a jokey, almost comedy band. As such, they decided to make a more mature and sophisticated album, and ‘Maroon‘ is it.

There’s still the same clever lyrics and narrative songs, but it seems like a lot of the wit displayed on the previous albums is missing.

After listening to it now, do you (still) like this album?

I do, and I don’t. On the one hand, it’s BNL, and I will never not like them. On the other hand, this album is pretty unremarkable. While musically they’ve improved, particularly noticeable in the production and arrangements, the fun of past albums seems to be lacking, even on the more up-tempo songs. Perhaps they were trying too hard to get away from ‘One Week‘…

Any stand-out tracks?

Two of the singles stand out for me, ‘Pinch Me‘ and ‘Falling For The First Time‘, otherwise I’d be hard pressed to name any of the others.

Rating out of 10?

7/10.
